Ingredients
  

For the apple filling

  • 5 lbs McIntosh apples (or Macoun apples) Choose a mix of sweet and tart apples.
  • 1 tablespoon zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon zest of 1 orange
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

For the streusel topping

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup packed cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • ½ lb. butter (diced and chilled) Ensure butter is chilled for a crumbly topping.
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions
 

Preparing the Apples

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  • In a large bowl, mix the apple slices with lemon zest, lemon juice, orange zest, orange juice, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss until the apples are well coated.
  • Spread the apple mixture into a baking dish.

Creating the Streusel Topping

  • In another bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oatmeal, and salt.
  • Add the chilled butter to the mixture and mix until crumbly using hands or a pastry cutter.

Baking

  • Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 to 50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. To reheat, place in the oven until warmed through.
