  • 4 large potatoes, sliced Use your favorite type of potatoes
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with lentils for a vegetarian version
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Use cheddar, mozzarella, or gouda
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For cooking the beef

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and ground beef, cooking until the beef is browned. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the meat mixture, and half of the cheese. Repeat layers.
  • Pour the milk over the top of the casserole.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  • Let sit for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve hot, pairs well with a green salad or steamed vegetables. Consider adding sour cream or fresh herbs on top for extra flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days or frozen for three months.
