Ingredients
  

For the Patty Melt

  • 1 lb ground beef Use good quality ground beef for better flavor.
  • 4 slices rye bread Rye bread gives it a traditional flavor.
  • 4 slices American cheese Feel free to experiment with different cheeses, like Swiss or cheddar.
  • 1 large onion, sliced Don't rush the caramelizing process for added sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Use for cooking onions and grilling the bread.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Adjust to your preference.

Preparation

  • In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized.
  • Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form it into 4 patties.
  • Cook the patties in the same skillet until desired doneness.
  • Place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  • In another skillet, butter one side of each slice of rye bread.

Assembly and Cooking

  • Assemble the patty melt by placing a patty with melted cheese onto a slice of bread, topping it with caramelized onions, and placing another slice of bread on top.
  • Grill the sandwich on medium heat until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted.
  • Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve.

Notes

Serve hot off the grill with fries, onion rings, or salad. Can be dipped in ketchup or mustard for added flavor. If you have leftovers, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat over medium heat before serving.
